Hi Wade,
I was pleased with the zoom on the 18-270 but the Tamron lens went back to the store. At the more wide angles, when you take pictures of family/products/things around the house and don't need to be zoomed in, the lens doesn't pick up the light as well. I found it to be slightly darker than normal in the shadows, particularly when it was under 55mm. Even when I tried to compensate with the flash settings/iso, it just wasn't perfect.
I returned it all and picked up the factory kit: 50D + 18-200 on Boxing Day at Merkle Camera (401 & Vic Park in Toronto). I think it was 1699 + tax for the kit, the sales associate I worked with was Patrick Ng. A very nice man, patient too.
I'm very happy with it the camera now. I don't have the full zoom but I'm happier with the more wide angle photos, which is what I'd be doing most of the time.

Hi Simon,

I am currently shopping for a new DSLR and the combination of the Canon EOS 50D (or possibly the 40D) and the Tamron 18-270mm with Image Stabilizer is the one I was contemplating.

If you have a minute, I was hoping you could give me your impressions on them. The more details the better.

Also, it seems like you got a good deal on the price, did you buy them online or in a local store?

Cheers and thank you.
