Fitness for the Day – March 10 2008

bicycle

Another day, another ride. Today’s adventure lasted exactly 50 minutes. During this time, I traveled 12.77 miles and burned 1006 Calories. It’s worth pointing out that after the fifty minutes elapsed, I keep cycling for another few minutes at a much slower pace. This lets my body cool down and let’s my heart rate drop down to a normal level. It’s never a good idea to go from my workout pace of 120-140 bpm to a dead stop.

A cool down is just as important as a warm up. In addition to letting your heart rate go down, it slows down your breathing rate. It also prevents blood from pooling in the area where you worked out, blood pooling causes dizziness and blackouts. Don’t forget to do some stretching to loosen up your muscles afterwards as well. All of this is important in preventing injury and minimizing discomfort or pain after a work out. If you want more information, check out this article.

Fitness for the Day – Feb 18th 2008

bicycle

It didn’t take long for me to break the 1000 Calorie burn mark, as a matter of fact it took me 48 minutes and 21 seconds to cover 12.7 miles which burned 1001 Calories on my bicycle at an incline/intensity level of 12.

While riding for the 48 minutes, I have added another item to my wishlist for fitness equipment related to cycline.

1) Polar F11

2) A new more comfortable seat for the bicycle.

Given that it only took 48 minutes to reach the 1K mark, I’ll keep doing it consistently and we’ll see where I end up in a few weeks.

Fitness for the Day – Feb 17th 2008

bicycle

I never actually got around to changing how the blog works, but I will eventually.  When I do, you’ll all see it happen.

I decided to work out earlier than usual on Sunday, mainly because I became frustrated over my Fuel Cells problem set.  I did some stretching and cycled for 44 minutes coviner 11.41 miles and burning 900 Calories.  My pulse rate peaked at 145bpm.  I still want to get a portable pulse monitor, similar.  The Polar F-11 would be sweet.

This workout is probably one of my longest and I didn’t feel sore afterwards.  I’m going to break the 1K Calorie mark this week and see what happens to the computer.  My guess is that it will reset, but we’ll see.

Fitness for the Day – Feb 11th 2008

bicycleI was running a bit late today so that meant I had to cut my working out a bit short.  I also normally work out in the evenings but with a project due this week, it meant I had to stay downtown late and get the job done.  During my thirty minute workout, I did some stretching and cycled again for 20 minutes and 3 seconds to cover 5.17 miles and burn 407 Calories.  Pulse rate was in the 130-140 bpm range which is good.  According to About.Com that puts me in the Average Fitness category.

Tomorrow’s my day off from school, will be spending it studying for a Wednesday midterm but I will definitely increase the duration of the workout to compensate for today.

Fitness for the Day – Feb 10th 2008

bicycleI missed my work out yesterday because I was downtown all morning and afternoon working on MIE443 (Mechanical Design: System and Integration) project.  This afternoon’s workout last about 50 minutes.  I did a few minutes of stretching to loosen up followed by 30 minutes and 2 seconds of bicycling where I covered 7.9 miles and burned 623 Calories.  Instead of using the typical ear clip to monitor my pulse rate, I held onto the handle bars which have their own pulse sensor.  To my surprise, it was reading in the 130-140bpm range, making that number far more realistic than the 80-110 I was getting from the ear clip.  Word of advice, use the stationary monitor instead of the mobile, or get a real one what straps to your chest and reports to a watch.  Following my bicycle ride I went through a portion of the Ab-Ripper X and did a little more stretching to loosen up afterwards.
