Super Talent Project X 2×1GB PC3 14400

Project XSuper Talent hasn’t always been known to manufacturer top end products, however this has changed since late 2007. In today’s review we have a kit from the Project X family and I would consider the Project X to be the first enthusiast line for Super Talent. The second would be the new Viper series. Both families feature heatsinks that have been a huge success for other companies. However, it’s not what’s on the outside that matters, but what is on the inside.

With the Super Talent Project X 2×1GB PC3-14400, we had really high hopes for the kit. What we got instead was a kit that didn’t perform at the intended specification. At least on our machines, the kit required 2.06V when it claimed to only need 2.00. Aside from that, the kit has been known to overclock fairly well with additional voltage. I suppose you can say it did do that, a top speed of 1900Mhz was achieved at ~2.01V at relaxed timings. Word on the net is that cranking the voltage up to 2.4V will give you some ridiculous results.

For me, the bottom line is that the kit didn’t perform at the rated specification. While I’m an overclocker, stability matters and comes first in my book. If it’s not stable at the rated specifications, you may be asking for trouble sometime down the road. The Director of Marketing at Super Talent said their kits are 100% stable and each kit goes through an in-house stability test, consisting of MemTest and 1hr of RST-Pro. Personally, though this entire blog is about my personal thoughts, I think the specifications were a bit tight and Super Talent didn’t leave enough margin for error. The slightest deviation from their setup or when/where there board was manufactured would probably lead you to stability issues at the default setting.

Incoming Reviews: SuperTalent 1800Mhz Project X

Jody’s got a new kit of DDR3 memory on Friday courtesy of SuperTalent. The 1800Mhz 2GB Project X kit is one of Super Talent’s fasted kit on the block. Sadly the fun didn’t last very long. It looks like we got a bad stick or the kit took a funny bounce on the over to London because it didn’t take very long before HCI Memtest started showing some errors. The word from Joe is that we’ll get a new kit sometime during the week of Dec 10th.

There’s still be no word as to when Corsair will ship us their TWIN3X2048-1800C7DFIN G.
