CoolIT USB Chiller

CoolIt USB ChillerCool It claims to be a company with a long presence in the industry, but I never heard their name until they came up with products like the Eliminator. As far as I know, that puts them in the less than 3 year time frame, an infant company in my mind. However, they have certainly come up with a series of impressive products, mainly ranging in the quality of CPU and GPU cooling.

The latest device we have here is the CoolIt USB Chiller, better known as a Beverage Chiller. There is a thermo-electric-cooling (TEC) inside the unit with a heatsink leading up to the surface. You place your drink on the surface and it’s able to lower it’s temperature keeping your drink refreshingly cold. The USB Chiller was capable of dropping a 100mL steel canister of water from 12C down to 9C. A can of coke kept its 4C temperature for 15 minutes before a low rise. A regular can started to warm up right away.

If you understand how a TEC works, you’ll know that on side of the dielectric plate it gets really cold but the other side then gets really hot. The only feature missing from the USB Chiller is the ability to take advantage of the hot side of the TEC to create a heater. This way you can keep your warm drinks warm in the winter and your cold drinks cold in the summer. A new name would be required, but that’s nothing some marketing folks can’t handle.
